Dental Restorations/ Fillings
Dental fillings are used to repair minimal tooth fractures, tooth decay, or otherwise surface damage on the teeth. Dental filling materials may be used to even out teeth surfaces for better biting or chewing.
What materials are used for dental fillings?
You have many choices for restoring damaged or decayed teeth, even down to the type of dental filling material. You may select to have the white “tooth-colored” fillings (composite or porcelain) or silver amalgam restorations. There are several pros and cons associated with both composite and amalgam fillings. Nowadays most restorations are tooth-colored restorations even though there is no scientific proof that mercury in amalgam is harmful to the body.
How is the tooth-colored (composite) restoration procedure?
Your dentist will prepare your teeth’s surface for applying tooth-colored composite, also known as resin. Composite will be applied in layers to your teeth, and each layer will be hardened (or bonded) by use of a special blue light. Your dentist will reshape and polish the composite to make it look and feel like your natural teeth.
