Periodontics & Gum Grafts
Periodontics is a branch of dentistry, which deals with the supporting structures of teeth, such as the jaw, gums, and surrounding soft tissue. A gum graft is a procedure used to recover receding gums. Gum recession is the process of the tissue surrounding a tooth to pull away and results in exposed roots. Exposed roots are more prone to sensitivity and abrasion, and tooth decay. If it is left untreated, gum recession can cause losing one or more of your teeth. It is a gradual process and usually goes unnoticed until it is severe. Regular visits to your dentist and dental hygienist are essential to treat gum recession at early stages and before it becomes complicated. Gum grafts are just one treatment that your dentist may recommend stopping the progress of recession and covering the exposed roots.
What are gum grafts?
A gum graft is a thin piece of tissue, which is usually taken from the patient’s mouth or donated tissue such as Alloderm. It is then put at the base of the recessed gum to prevent the progress of recession. Your dentist will examine your gums and discuss your best gum graft treatment option with you.
