Wisdom Teeth Removal
One item on our dental exam checklist at ComfoDent clinics is your wisdom teeth health. Wisdom teeth (or third molars), appear between the ages of 16 and 25 and play an important role in our oral health. Your dentist will examine your teeth and perform X-rays to ensure that your wisdom teeth are healthy and do not pose any risk at your oral health. For the complicated cases, we are equipped with an advanced technology, which is called Cone Beam CT Scan (three-dimensional X-Ray) at ComfoDent clinics. This machine allows us to evaluate the condition of your wisdom teeth precisely. Depending on your situation, your dentist may recommend removing your wisdom teeth.
What are the reasons for removing wisdom teeth?
Wisdom teeth removal is often recommended as a treatment for a problem you already have, or to prevent a problem you may have in the future. Here are some of the common reasons and recommendations for wisdom teeth removal:
- Wisdom teeth are impacted. Impacted wisdom teeth are trapped under the gum and cannot break through. Impacted wisdom teeth can cause other complications such as infection, damage to other teeth or bone, or a cyst.
- Wisdom teeth sometimes grow at the wrong angle and push against the other teeth.
- The jaw is small and doesn’t have room for wisdom teeth.
- It is difficult to reach wisdom teeth with floss or a toothbrush for proper oral care. This problem makes wisdom teeth vulnerable to tooth decay and gum disease.
- Wisdom teeth are removed as part of another treatment such as orthodontics (braces).
How is the wisdom teeth removal procedure?
At ComfoDent clinics, our experienced dentists perform wisdom teeth removal procedure with or without sedation. We also provide a service called PRF (Platelet Rich Fibrin) for a fast recovery after the extraction. If you would like more information about PRF, please visit this blog post or speak to one of our dentists during your next visit. For the wisdom tooth removal procedure, you will receive a local anesthetic to prevent any pain during the extraction. You may also receive some form of sedation for your comfort if you and your dentist have decided to use them beforehand. Your dentist will gain access to your wisdom teeth by removing any tissue covering them, during the extraction. You may need stitches after your wisdom teeth are removed. Your dentist will speak to you or the person who has accompanied you about the post-extraction instructions and about what to expect during the next few hours and days.
If you need more information about wisdom teeth extraction or would like to discuss your options, please do not hesitate to contact one of our three clinics at Chilliwack. We will book a free consultation appointment for you to review your options with your dentist.
